Abdominal Liposuction: Removing Stubborn Postpartum Lower Belly and Waist Fat with Liposuction

Hello, this is Dr. Yongseung Seo
from Lesarts Plastic Surgery.

Many women find themselves struggling
with the changes they see in the mirror
after pregnancy and raising a child.

While the joy of welcoming a baby
is beyond compare, stubborn pockets of fat
that remain despite dieting and exercise
often become a major source of stress.

In particular,
the increased volume of the Lower Abdomen
and Love Handles developed during pregnancy
is extremely difficult to restore

to its original firmness and smooth contour
through weight loss alone.

Even after returning
to their pre-pregnancy weight,

many women continue to struggle
with a blunted waistline
and a protruding lower abdomen,

which can diminish their confidence
every time they get dressed.

Postpartum Lower Abdominal Bulging – Lesarts Plastic Surgery

Even after months of dieting and exercise,
the “final 2%” of body contour concerns often remain unresolved,
leading to frustration and repeated cycles of weight regain.

When meaningful body contour changes cannot be achieved
through personal effort alone, Liposuction directly removes unwanted fat cells,
providing one of the fastest and most effective ways to create a refined body contour.

Rather than simply removing fat,
it can become a powerful source of motivation
and a well-deserved reward for all the effort already invested.

Today, we will introduce the case of a patient
who visited Lesarts Plastic Surgery with similar concerns,
and take a closer look at the causes of postpartum body contour changes
and the customized liposuction design created for her.

Patient Information

Age: 30s

Height: 162 cm

Weight: 58.3 kg

BMI: 22.2 kg/m²

Body Fat Percentage: 32.9%

Visceral Fat Level: 8

Patients with similar body measurements may experience different surgical outcomes.

Preoperative Body Contour Assessment

The patient had delivered two children vaginally
and successfully lost approximately 10 kg,
maintaining her current weight through consistent self-care.

Despite her weight loss,
her greatest concern remained the lower abdomen,
and she visited our clinic hoping to achieve a slimmer, more defined waistline.

Reducing Postpartum Lower Belly and Love Handles – Lesarts Plastic Surgery

On physical examination,
the anterior abdomen appeared protruded,
and Rectus Diastasis associated with childbirth
was also identified.

The waistline lacked definition,
and fat accumulation within the Love Handles
created a noticeably thicker contour.

Ultrasound measurements revealed:

Upper Abdomen: 26 mm

Lower Abdomen: 27 mm

Flanks: 14 / 14 mm

Love Handles: 19 / 18 mm

Overall, sufficient Subcutaneous Fat
was present to expect meaningful improvement
through Abdominal Liposuction.

However,
the patient also had relatively severe Rectus Diastasis
following pregnancy and childbirth.

Abdominal Liposuction Design for Improving the Abdomen and Waistline

To achieve the patient’s goal
of a flatter lower abdomen,

we first discussed
the realistic extent of improvement
that could be expected.

Because increased Visceral Fat
had pushed the abdominal wall forward,

Liposuction alone
could not create a completely flat abdomen,

and we explained that
reducing Visceral Fat through postoperative weight management
would be essential.

At the same time,
the patient had significant Rectus Diastasis,
a common condition following childbirth,

which cannot be fundamentally corrected
with Liposuction alone.

Fortunately,
because the abdominal wall was relatively thin
while Visceral Fat was more prominent,

the separation of the abdominal muscles
was unlikely to become obvious
even after aggressive fat removal.

However,
if Visceral Fat decreases with future weight loss,

the widened midline separation
may become more visible.

Should this become a concern,

we explained, using surgical photographs,
that Abdominoplasty could be considered
to repair the abdominal muscles
and remove excess skin.

During surgical planning,
the patient’s highest priority
was achieving a more defined waistline
above the pelvis.

Accordingly,
the posterior flanks and Love Handles
were treated as the primary target areas
for maximum fat removal.

We also noted
a natural left-to-right asymmetry
of the waist,

and explained beforehand
that once the overlying fat was removed,

the underlying skeletal asymmetry
might become slightly more noticeable.

Before and After Postpartum Abdominal Liposuction

Photographs were taken
under identical lighting conditions
two months after surgery.

Although only two months had passed,
before the final results had fully developed,

the patient’s body contour
already showed a clearly noticeable improvement
compared with before surgery.

Before-and-After Lower Belly and Anterior Abdominal Liposuction – Dr. Yongseung Seo | Lesarts Plastic Surgery

The anterior abdomen
was treated with the maximum amount of fat removal
that could be performed safely.

Thanks to the patient’s consistent management
of Visceral Fat and healthy dietary habits after surgery,

the abdominal volume
was significantly reduced,

resulting in a smoother
and more refined frontal contour
compared with before surgery.

Postpartum Abdominal Liposuction – Dr. Yongseung Seo | Lesarts Plastic Surgery

As anticipated,
a mild degree of Rectus Diastasis
remained visible after surgery.

Fortunately,
it was not significant enough
to cause noticeable concern,

so we decided
to continue with routine follow-up
and observation.

Before-and-After Flank and Love Handle Liposuction – Dr. Yongseung Seo | Lesarts Plastic Surgery

The patient’s highest priority
was achieving a more defined waistline,

and by thoroughly contouring
the flanks and Love Handles,

we were able to create
an even more sculpted waist

than she had
before pregnancy.

Although a slight degree
of natural skeletal asymmetry
became more noticeable,

the overall result
remained harmonious,

creating a slim
and natural-looking silhouette.

We also encouraged the patient
to continue maintaining
healthy lifestyle habits,

as consistent postoperative care
can lead to even better
long-term results.
