After countless precise snips, finding rest—A hair designer’s journey to achieving celebrity arm lines

Hello, this is Dr. Yongseung Seo
from Lesarts Plastic Surgery.

For professionals who work closely with people,
“atmosphere” and “image” often play a bigger role than expected.

Especially for hair designers, who complete a client’s style,
not only technical skill at their fingertips,
but also overall silhouette and impression
can serve as important elements of trust.

Naturally, this leads to a growing awareness
of one’s own body shape and proportions.

For this reason, many attempt change through weight loss,
but what truly matters is not just the number on the scale,
but a “refined and defined line.”

In particular, the arms often do not appear as slim as expected
even after weight loss,
or may retain uneven volume in key contour areas,
resulting in a less defined silhouette.
This can make the arms appear shorter and bulkier
than they actually are.

Recently, rather than simply aiming for thinner arms,
there has been a clear preference for a straight, streamlined arm line
with balanced volume.

The case introduced in this post
is a patient who carefully showed a photo of Rosé during consultation.

Rather than just thin arms,
they aspired to her signature straight arm line—
a smooth, uninterrupted contour
extending from shoulder to wrist.

Could arm liposuction help achieve
the straight arm line the patient desired?

[Patient Information]
Age: Late 20s
Height: 164 cm
Weight: 56.3 kg
BMI: 20.9 kg/m²
Body Fat Percentage: 32.1%

*Even with similar body conditions,
liposuction results may vary depending on individual characteristics.

[Preoperative Body Assessment for Arm Liposuction]
Ultrasound findings:
Back of arms: 15/14 mm
Front of arms: 6/7 mm
Shoulder muscle: 18/15 mm

Preoperative Assessment for Arm Liposuction

There was sufficient fat volume in the back of the patient’s arms,
so the expected outcome of arm liposuction was considered to be quite favorable.

However, due to relatively developed shoulder muscles,
achieving a perfectly right-angled arm contour would be difficult.
Instead, a natural line gently flowing from the shoulder joint
was anticipated.
Additionally, as there was asymmetry in shoulder muscle size,
there was a possibility that the right arm might appear slightly thicker
or differ subtly in contour after surgery.
Since there was minimal fat in the front of the arms,
noticeable changes in that area might be limited.

[Preoperative Design for Arm Liposuction]

Rosé’s arms are perceived as slim by anyone.
Therefore, the fundamental direction of this procedure
was to remove as much fat as possible
while avoiding complications.

However, her arm line is not only slim
but also smooth and straight.
If excessive fat removal is performed,
the underlying muscle contours may become more visible,
creating an uneven appearance
that differs from her soft, streamlined arm line.

For this reason, instead of aggressive fat removal,
a controlled approach was planned—
leaving a moderate amount of fat between muscle groups
to maintain a soft and natural contour.

The most significant concern in planning the surgery
was the patient’s keloid-prone skin.
She had previously experienced keloid formation
after rhinoplasty, which caused considerable distress.

It was clearly explained that keloid formation
may be unavoidable in some cases.
To minimize this risk,
the number of incisions was reduced as much as possible,
and their placement was carefully selected
in less visible areas.
In addition, a multi-step protection approach
was planned to reduce skin irritation at the incision sites.

Any potential keloid formation
would be actively managed postoperatively.

As diagnosed during the consultation,
there was sufficient fat volume in the posterior bulging area,
which led to a noticeable reduction in overall arm thickness after the procedure.

In particular, the outward bulging contour that was visible when standing at rest was smoothed out,
resulting in a narrower upper body width and an overall slimmer appearance.

If excessive fat removal had been performed,
the underlying bone and muscle contours could have appeared overly pronounced,
resulting in a firm and uneven appearance.

However, by leaving a thin and even layer of fat
between the muscle groups,
a soft and straight arm line—just as the patient desired—was achieved.

As explained prior to surgery, the right shoulder muscle was more developed,
so while slight asymmetry remains,
the surrounding fat was precisely contoured to match the muscle line,
resulting in a natural appearance where the difference is barely noticeable.

In consideration of the patient’s keloid-prone skin,
minimal incisions and careful protection of the incision sites
were applied to reduce concerns about scarring.
Postoperatively, there has been no significant skin thickening
due to keloid formation, so the progress will continue to be monitored.

As everyone has different bone structures and muscle composition,
it is nearly impossible to replicate another person’s exact shape.
However, every effort was made to achieve a result
as close as possible to the desired arm line,
and it was a very rewarding case
as the patient was highly satisfied with the outcome.
