[Gynecomastia] Gym workouts, gynecomastia, and steroid use

Why does the chest appear more prominent
despite consistent workouts?

Gym workouts, gynecomastia, and steroid use

Hello, this is Dr. Jihoon Moon
from Lesarts Plastic Surgery.

After starting workouts,
instead of a firm, defined chest shape,
a protruding chest may become noticeable.

In such cases,
it is important to consider
the possibility of gynecomastia.

During consultations,
I often receive
this common question.

“Can consistent exercise
help reduce
chest size?”

Many people believe
that gynecomastia is simply
caused by weight gain.

So they expect
that regular workouts
will naturally improve it.

However, in clinical practice,
the results of exercise
are often not as positive.

Even with low body fat
and consistent workouts,
many still struggle with gynecomastia.

Why gynecomastia becomes more noticeable after chest workouts – Dr. Jihoon Moon, Lesarts Plastic Surgery

Exercise can sometimes
make gynecomastia
more noticeable.

With workouts, especially weight training,
the chest muscles,
or pectoralis muscles, develop.

However, when glandular tissue
is present beneath the chest,
muscle growth can push it upward.

As the pectoral muscles enlarge,
the glandular tissue is lifted,
making the area more prominent.

This can cause
the nipple and areola region
to appear more protruded.

As body fat decreases,
the chest contour enlarged
by glandular tissue becomes clearer.

The protrusion and shape
tend to appear
more defined and noticeable.

As a result,
some patients mention
a similar concern.

“After starting workouts,
my chest actually
became more noticeable.”

Anabolic steroid side effects – gynecomastia – Dr. Jihoon Moon, Lesarts Plastic Surgery

Anabolic steroids related
to muscle growth

As fitness culture expands,
interest in anabolic steroids
has also increased.

These substances act
similar to male hormones,
promoting muscle growth.

They enhance
protein synthesis
and overall muscle development.

However, these drugs
are classified as prohibited
in sports.

Various side effects
have also been
widely reported.

Common side effects include
the following conditions.

Gynecomastia

Testicular atrophy

Reduced sperm production
and potential infertility

Worsening acne
and hair loss

Abnormal cholesterol levels
and increased cardiovascular risk

Liver function abnormalities

Mood changes
and increased aggression

Anabolic steroids are not simply
drugs that increase muscle mass,
but agents that alter hormone balance.

Because they affect
the body’s hormonal system,
various side effects can occur.

Why do anabolic steroids
cause gynecomastia?

Some anabolic steroids
can be converted
into estrogen in the body.

During this process,
male glandular tissue
becomes stimulated.

This can lead
to breast enlargement,
resulting in gynecomastia.

Quick note,
this is different
from medical steroids.

Because of the term “steroid,”
many people confuse
them with therapeutic drugs.

Steroids used in hospitals
for skin or allergy treatment
are mostly corticosteroids.

These medications help
reduce inflammation
and regulate immune responses.

In contrast, anabolic steroids
enhance muscle growth
and male hormone effects.

Although the names are similar,
their purpose and action
are completely different.

Then how is this different
from testosterone therapy?

Testosterone injections,
commonly known treatments,
are used medically.

They are prescribed
for hormone deficiency
in clinical settings.

However, when used
for muscle enhancement,
they are banned in sports.

They can also affect
hormonal balance
(testosterone → estradiol).

As a result,
various side effects,
including gynecomastia, may occur.

Effects of gynecomastia surgery and before-and-after differences – Dr. Jihoon Moon, Lesarts Plastic Surgery

Gynecomastia cannot be resolved
through exercise alone
.”

When glandular tissue
is the underlying cause,
exercise cannot eliminate it.

Workouts can reduce fat
and build muscle,
but cannot reduce developed glandular tissue.

In some cases,
the more you exercise,
the more prominent the chest appears.

Exercise is
a very healthy habit
for overall well-being.

However, using unverified substances
to build muscle quickly
can lead to additional problems.

If you are concerned
about your chest shape,
it is important to evaluate.

Rather than assuming
it is just a matter of exercise,
check for actual gynecomastia.
