Many patients who are about to undergo gynecomastia surgery, or those who have already had the surgery, often ask, “When can I start exercising after gynecomastia surgery?”

For a long time, they may have had to deal with a protruding chest that resembled a woman’s breast line, which often led to a hunched or passive posture. However, after resolving their concerns with gynecomastia surgery, they often become motivated to exercise again.

That being said, patients who have undergone gynecomastia surgery should be aware that there will be restrictions on activities for a certain period of time.

In the early stages after surgery, if high-intensity exercises are done too soon, increased blood flow to the chest area could cause rebleeding, and there may be concerns about the incision site not healing properly.

Therefore, for the first 3 to 4 weeks after surgery, it’s recommended to avoid activities that require repetitive arm movements, exercises, or lifting heavy objects.

In other words, it’s important to stay within the normal range of motion for daily activities without overexerting yourself. After a certain recovery period, and with proper consultation with your medical team, you can begin exercising. This will help ensure stable and smooth recovery.

Now, let’s take a look at the before-and-after photos of a patient who underwent gynecomastia surgery to explain the process in more detail.

This patient is in his late 20s and has been aware of his gynecomastia symptoms since high school, due to the protrusion and enlargement of both sides of his chest.

After becoming an adult, the patient made efforts to reduce his chest size through weight control and exercise. However, despite these efforts, he did not experience significant changes, and the discomfort persisted. As a result, he sought treatment for his condition.

During the pre-surgery body assessment for gynecomastia treatment, it was visibly evident that there was significant development of the chest overall.

To confirm the exact symptoms and causes, an ultrasound examination was conducted. The results revealed that both sides of the chest had thick, widely distributed glandular tissue, which diagnosed the patient with Simon Grade 2A true gynecomastia.

Additionally, excessive fat was found in both the front and side areas of the chest, indicating a complex form of true gynecomastia.

Therefore, the patient needed glandular tissue excision to address the underlying chest volume issue. In order to prevent any collapse or imbalance in the chest shape after the glandular tissue was removed, a tissue repositioning procedure was planned to restore the chest’s appearance.

Furthermore, excess fat in the front and side of the chest was to be removed through liposuction, helping to refine the chest’s contour.

However, the patient works in a profession that involves frequent use of the upper body and arms. Due to this, there was a risk of chest pain and potential bleeding at the surgical site if heavy lifting were done post-surgery. As such, consistent follow-up care to monitor any postoperative symptoms was recommended.

Below are the before and after photos taken two months after the gynecomastia surgery.

Looking at the photos taken two months after the gynecomastia surgery, we can see a significant improvement.

Before the surgery, the patient tried to reduce chest volume through dieting and exercise, but despite losing fat in other areas and doing chest exercises, the chest area became more prominent, leading to a lack of confidence and discomfort in daily life.

These issues were corrected through glandular tissue excision, tissue repositioning, and liposuction. As a result, the lower chest and side chest lines, which were previously protruding, have been transformed into a more masculine chest shape.

In particular, even with just a plain white t-shirt, the firm upper chest and overall silhouette improvements are clearly noticeable.

By the second month, the patient had entered the recovery phase without any major issues. I informed them that with continued exercise and a balanced diet, they should be able to maintain the results of the gynecomastia surgery effectively.
